Kanaky / New Caledonia is a non autonomous territory administered by France. This territory is undergoing a process of decolonisation known as the Noumea accord. Straight out of Gondwana, this little country is full of natural treasures and has the largest lagoon in the world. The country is one of the world's top biodiversity hotspots. The majority of species are endemic, which means that they are found nowhere else in the world. The south of the country is particularly spectacular - and this precisely where the multinational Inco have started building their chemical processing plant and mine dumping 25 heavy metals into the lagoon at the rate of hundreds of cubic metres per hour. No serious independent scientific study of the project has yet been carried out. A third party study group declared in April that their work would take at least two more years. In no other country is it imaginable that a factory of this scale be built without scientific assessment. By signing this petition you request: - an immediate halt of the construction of this giant industrial rubbish tip - that environmental studies are carried out and that the areas already destroyed be rehabilitated. - that international norms and limits be respected and that a policy of sustainable development and indigenous rights be respected. l’application des règles et normes internationales concernant le Développement Durable et la prise en compte des droits des peuples autochtones.
